It is a fundamental truth of the universe that energy and power can neither be created nor destroyed. They can only move from one form to another. In America, as everyplace else in the universe, there is a finite amount of power and only three places at which it can be held: the government, the corporation and the individual. There is little consensus among political parties where the greatest amount of power should be allocated....

Both sides of the political aisle support more checks, but neither parties have signaled much willingness to seriously compromise on the overall spending of a full stimulus package. Democrats have condemned the GOP for failing to present sufficient funding to tackle the pandemic and Republicans have accused Democrats of using COVID to advance their political agenda. During a Congressional hearing on Tuesday, Democratic Rep. Rashida Tlaib of Michigan asked Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, “Yes or no, do you believe another stimulus check could help stabilize the economy?...

That dynamic was magnified in a New York Times/Siena College poll released last week showing that 64% of Democratic voters would prefer a different nominee in 2024. While Biden bristled at questions from reporters about the poll, he pointed to a finding in that same poll that 92% of Democrats would support him if he ran and was opposed by Donald Trump. The poll also found Biden would edge Trump in a rematch 44% to 41%....

On Monday, Trump threatened to expand the deployment of federal law enforcement from Portland to New York City, Chicago, Philadelphia, Detroit, Baltimore and Oakland. The president made the threat despite already facing widespread backlash over the Portland deployments, which have seen one protester left seriously injured after being shot in the head with impact munitions. Others have been arrested by unidentifiable agents and forced into unmarked vans. Still, Trump said, protesters and anarchists across the country have gotten “out of control....

More than 50 legislators are backing a bipartisan relief package that was unveiled on Tuesday, one of the few bipartisan plans to be proposed since the CARES Act passed eight months ago. If passed, it would provide much-needed aid to businesses and people who are unemployed, whose crucial benefits are set to expire at the end of the month, as well as end a months-long stalemate between Democrats and Republicans....

Senator Rob Portman, an Ohio Republican, announced in January 2021 that he would retire and not seek reelection in 2022. GOP Senator Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania similarly announced in October 2020 that he would not run for another Senate term. While Toomey voted to convict Trump in his second impeachment trial and Portman condemned Trump’s actions in that case, GOP candidates backed by the former president narrowly won their primaries to face off against Democratic contenders on November 8....

DeSantis, who is very talented at picking at culture war scabs, continues to increase his profile by serving as Trump-Lite, without the “lite part.” Not content with aping 45’s mannerisms and intentionally donning ill-fitting suits like a sun-drenched Kim Jong-un, DeSantis is trying to lift Trump’s entire governing philosophy wholesale—circus over substance every time, preferably with as much performative cruelty as the law allows. But Democrats aren’t exactly outfoxing the GOP on an issue that has bedeviled the country for two decades....
